ABOUT US
“It has been just a year since Darrel Draper and I agreed that it would be good idea to form a small group to study the Moulton edition of the Lewis and Clark Journals. We began meeting on January 9, 2001 at the Western Historic Trails Center in Council Bluffs on Tuesday mornings. We never dreamed what would happen next! There were over a dozen people who showed up, and then that number multiplied by a dozen when we decided to form a chapter of the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation in March 2001. We now have almost 150 members of the Mouth of the Platte Chapter, and we are not yet one year old.”
– Kira Gale, President and Co-Captain, December 2001 While the first Study Group session proceeded through the Journals, during the following sessions the study group members volunteer for a date and a topic they wish to speak on. Topics cover any facet of the journey. However, this MOP webpage will cover mainly Iowa and Nebraska and area. The primary source used is The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, by Gary E. Moulton, Editor, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Center for Great Plains Studies, 13 volumes. As well as the journals of Lewis and Clark, he has included those of Sgt. Ordway, Sgt. Floyd, Sgt. Gass, and Pvt. Whitehouse. When
quotes or excerpts from the journals are used here, they will be put into
standard English for easier reading. |
